Midsummer Day 2015

Even the longest day must start with tea
and collecting cups and plates from yesterday
to fill the dishwasher, and the general
cleaning up of the kitchen ready for it
to be trashed again. I put the radio
on. ‘The canaries in the coal mine start
to fall’- there are many other ways to
tell what’s going on, but this is often
how the story begins…  The sun is concealed
this morning, this celebration day, this
feast day of Saint Aloysius Gonzago
and more beside. Although the cloud thickens
we have light, diffuse and gentle but the
truth remains: ‘When in Greece, pay in cash.’
